How to Make a Solar Chandelier

We ran across this beautiful yet dated chandelier one day while at Habitat for Humanity and snatched that baby up. The hubby has been wanting to make some outdoor hanging lighting, and this chandelier would be perfect for what he was wanting to make.

A quick stop at Home Depot on the way home to pick up some solar stake lights was all we needed to get started on this project.

Once home the hubby jumped right into removing all the wiring from the chandelier. Since it was going to be a solar light no wiring was needed.

Since neither one of us liked the brassy dated color of the chandelier he gave it a couple coats of black spray paint.

I had thought of distressing the decorative balls on the chandelier letting some of the brass show through. But the hubby’s idea was for me to dry brush the decorative balls hitting the raised areas and letting the black show through from the un-raised edges.

Next, we added the new solar lights which worked out perfectly. We just removed the stakes from the heads of the solar lights. Which left a one-inch cap where we squirted some clear gorilla glue. Then slid them onto the metal rods on the chandelier where the light bulbs use to be.

We then placed a piece of wood under one side of the lights to hold them straight, and a piece of cardboard on top of the solar lights. We gently tighten (so not to damage the solar panels) the wood clamps to hold them in place till they were completely dry. We let it sit a couple days just to make sure it was good and dry.

Then we removed the clamps and hung out new beautiful solar chandelier in the tree by the pool, using a heavy black chain, and a strong clip where we can easily remove it when needed. Like in strong winds, or over the winter. Love how it turned out!
