The Trick to Creating Gorgeous Window Boxes

I love lush and beautiful window boxes, but every year for 6 years mine looked sad and stringy. Even with constant watering they always seemed to be on the brink of death. I almost gave up on them, but decided to give it one more go; and I finally succeeded in creating the perfect window boxes! So how did I do it? It was so ridiculously easy, I feel stupid for not discovering these two simple steps sooner.
I always wanted beautiful lush window boxes like you see in magazines. I finally stumbled upon two simple steps to create the perfect window boxes!
Step 1: Plant in Miracle Grow soil. Planters lose nutrients extremely fast, so in order to get full beautiful plants they need to fed. Every year I take out as much soil as I can from the planter and mix it in a bucket with equal amounts of Miracle Grow. This way I save money and the plants still get fed.
Step 2: Buy hanging baskets or container refills. To get a lush full look immediately I buy hanging baskets or planter refills and break them apart. That way I already have plants trailing over the edge (the mix of pink trailers all came together in one pot). I also find that it's cheaper than buying all the plants individually. Lastly: don't forget to water! A lot!

Do they need anything for protection against leaf-eating bugs? I seem to struggle with that pest..

Thanks for the great info on using plants from hanging baskets. My window boxes always looked like they needed some serious help. By the time they filled in nicely we would get the first good frost.

I always buy hanging pots to replant into all my container gardens. Cheaper and no waiting for them to look good!
