How to Build a Mudroom Bench

We turned an unused area of the basement into a mudroom by building a custom bench with cubbies underneath. We were able to use scrap wood we had on hand, along with some 2x4's. Here is how we did it!
We used scrap wood that we had on hand from shelving that we ripped out of the garage. My husband drew a rough sketch of the bench and figured out the measurements. We cut the boards for the bench seat and the dividers underneath the bench. You could also use plywood for the bench seat; we just wanted to use what we had.
We built the frame of the bench by attaching a piece of 2x4 to each side of the wall to act as a cleat for the bench top to sit on. We used 3 pieces of 2x4s spaced evenly across the bench to attach the top boards to, just to give the bench more structure and reduce the possibility of the board sagging.
We dry fit the cut pieces before painting them. The cubbie dividers are slid into a groove made with 2x4's attached underneath. You can see them in the pic above.
Once the pieces were cut, I primed and painted them. I used one of the samples I had bought when trying to decide on a exterior house color. The paint is Behr Marquee in Gotham Gray in a matte finish.
To achieve a finished look, we attached a face board to the front of the bench top, using wood glue and finish nails. We used clamps to hold it in place while drying.
We assembled the finished pieces by screwing the top into the 2x4 slats and slid the dividers into the "slots" we screwed into the underside of the bench, then nailed them in.
We made a cushion using foam and a piece of leather we already had on hand and added some storage baskets underneath to finish the area! To read the details on this entire transformation, head to my blog Real Girl's Realm.
