Refresh a Deck With Deckover Paint

Our tired deck was in desperate need of some TLC, but we weren't ready to pull the trigger on a brand new deck or patio installation. Instead, we used Deckover paint to give our deck new life. After a year, the paint job still looks great. We are so thankful that this painting project bought us a few more years until we need to do a major deck project. Read all the ways we saved money on this project on the blog: deckover paint project.
Here's how our deck looked before this project. The previous coat of deckover paint was starting to look tired and worn. There were also spots where the board were pretty tired looking.
Like this spot here! Yikes! I'm not sure what looks worse: the deck boards or my nail polish! You can also see a lot of pebble rocks in between the deck boards, which we meticulously scraped out before we could paint. We also washed the deck with a regular hose and deck cleaning solution before painting. We did not take the time to sand before applying our new Deckover paint.
Applying the Deckover paint was a lot like spreading peanut butter. The paint is thick and covers well. It took about 25 hours total to repaint the whole deck and railings, and recover a few cushions for our patio furniture.
Look at the difference! We are really happy with the results. We also love our new chair cushions, which blend nicely with the new deck paint color. If you love this project, pin it to your DIY board to come back to later.

I was wondering what colour you chose? Our decking boards are painted mission brown and it shows the dust and dirt really badly so it never looks clean. I have googled what colour however it seems the internet is divided ie half say use light colour another half says dark.

We also were not happy with this product! By the second summer it was peeling off everywhere! I found it very hard to apply too!

I opted to go with deck correct. I used deck over before and it is junk (same issues as above), so I did some research and this year applied this at my new home; with an older deck.

few things to note...you will be happier if you spring for a deck paint roller versus the regular one that they say is fine. It just applies nicer and fills in the creases better. First coat looks a little funky, but don’t be scared. Also, roller rinses clean, so re-use it. Got it at Lowe’s where I got the Deck Correct.

I went lighter so I can actually enjoy my deck and not overheat or scald my feet. It’s going to require a 3rd coat, but I’m waiting a little while to apply to ensure it’s really really dry. I am concerned about potential marking from use, but I’m more interested in being able to use it and extend the life. Plus I’m east coast and damp, so algae prevention is needed and this has it!

I’m excited to see next year. I’ve read reviews where people have reported 5 years of use and are reapplying to extend the life again. I don’t know if I quite believe that, but give me a few years and I’m thrilled!
