Have a space that you just can't quite figure out what to do with? Maybe you just want to style an area. Floating shelves are a great solution and you won't believe how easy it is to make one!
As always, we have an amazing video tutorial, so make sure to watch it for helpful tips and suggestions! We love to build and make the process easy for you.
Make sure to head over to the blog for your free printable building plans! These shelves are customizable for your need. Our plan shows a 36 inch shelf. First, rip a 2x4 to 2 inches wide using a table saw (the hardware store could do this part for you). Then, cut your shelf support pieces to length.
Clamp, pre-drill holes, and attach supports with wood screws. Take note of where you will install this so you know where to place the middle pieces. You don't want them blocking your access to a stud.
Now it's time to build the shell. Cut your 1x6 and 1x4 pieces to length according to building plans (or your customized needs). Glue, clamp and attach side pieces to shelf front with nailer. Then, attach shelf bottom in similar fashion. Using your shelf support for correct fit, attach the top of your shelf with glue and nails. Once glue is dry, pull out the shelf support and fill holes and imperfections in shell. Then, sand.
We used pre-stain wood conditioner then stained our shelf shell. You may wish to add some poly coats as well.
Attach the shelf support to your wall. Check for level as you go, using studs for adequate support. Slide shell into place and secure bottom with a screw or two.
Now, style your space and admire your handiwork!
