DIY Fireplace Makeover

We had a big fireplace in the center of our living room with a ton of potential, but it needed a lot of work. We used shiplap from Home Depot and replaced the tile and ended up with a totally transformed fireplace - the mantel is a separate tutorial, but it completely polishes off the look!

Here's the before of our fireplace - as you can see, it wasn't terrible, but it definitely needed some work - including fixing the missing tile on the surround!

Our first step was demolishing the old tile and replacing the drywall behind it. Once we replaced the drywall, we taped & mudded the seams, and then we were ready to install our new tile!

We chose a bold, graphic pattern for our tile. As you can see, we also removed the existing mantel to prepare for our new, DIY mantel.

Next up, it was time to install the shiplap. Here are a few tips:

Start by marking where your studs are on the wall. Then, begin to install the shiplap. You'll want to start at the top of the wall to ensure that the top piece is perfectly level (because your ceiling might not be). Use a nail gun to nail the shiplap directly into the studs.

Continue all the way around your fireplace until it's completely covered. Be sure to miter the corners of the fireplace where they meet.

Finally, it's time to trim, caulk, and paint! We used corner trim on all of the corners of the fireplace, added baseboards and cove molding, and then caulked all of the nail holes and visible seams. You can see all of the details for this project over on my blog!

I love the tile pattern, but am wondering if you couldn't have just stenciled the existing tile? I've seen that pattern stenciled on a patio, a cement floor and a bathroom floor - and all the DIYers who've done it claim it's held up great.

At any rate, it's a huge improvement and looks absolutely gorgeous!
