BEFORE: In what remains one of our most popular Reader Remodels of all time, the remodel of this 1880 Italianate took home the Grand Prize in our annual contest a few years ago. The scaled-down Queen Anne had its original turret but lost its detailed porch—swapped for an all-wrong Colonial Revival one in a 1914 renovation.
AFTER: A careful renovation, based on the original architect’s plan, brought back the gabled entry—and the home’s charm. Take a tour of TOH's 2009 winner> http://tinyurl.com/pajx84w ENTER THIS YEAR'S READER REMODEL CONTEST> http://tinyurl.com/o5zlmbt
BEFORE: "When we first saw the Cape, in 2002, we knew it wasn't exactly a dream come true. John's in theater—his specialty is set design—and I'm a graphic designer. Both of us love old houses that have plenty of character, and this one had a facade as blank as a white plate." -Homeowner TAKE A VIDEO TOUR OF THE COMPLETED SPACE> http://tinyurl.com/oft9b82
AFTER: Now, warm cedar shingles, bright shutters, and crisp bands of horizontal trimwork reinject charm into a once-blank facade. Take a tour of TOH's 2010 winner> http://tinyurl.com/nrc72ed ENTER THIS YEAR'S READER REMODEL CONTEST> http://tinyurl.com/o5zlmbt
BEFORE: This family made a DIY job of turning an 1895 Tudor on the verge of being condemned into their dream home. But first, it took seven guys armed with pitchforks to clear five dumpsters' worth of garbage out of the house.
AFTER: "When people ask how we've come this far with the house on just my nurse's salary, I say that family, friends, and good neighbors are worth their weight in gold. Sure, I pulled myself out of bed at 4 A.M. each day before my shift to do plumbing, hang drywall, and scour, strip, and sand just about every stick of wood in this place. But if it weren't for those folks, we wouldn't be living here today," said the homeowner.

Among the home's most impressive details are the restored fireplace mantel and mosaic-tile surround in the foyer. Take a full tour of the house> http://tinyurl.com/ojmdc26 ENTER THIS YEAR'S READER REMODEL CONTEST> http://tinyurl.com/o5zlmbt
