Two years ago when touring the apartment that I was leasing, the agent showed me the third story laundry room with a doorway leading out onto an abandoned 18' X 18' Deck surrounded by black wrought iron fencing with six built in planter supports. It was like showing me a blank canvas. It has been my therapy and sanctuary in downtown Long Beach, CA.
Started with small cuttings from a friends yard, these native geraniums withstand being in the sun all day and bring hundreds of red blooms.
A little sanding and repainting made my sister's recently cast off lawn chairs into an inviting conversation area to enjoy the outdoors.
I've learned that spray paint is your friend. I use it often to up the dramatic red focal points. The plastic table and chairs is harmonized with a neutral, textured desert bisque color.
The stained glass pieces were all created by my father, of blessed memory. I like to think that he would approve of what I've done in this space.

All this color makes inner-city life enjoyable.
The palm trees, jacarandas and interesting architectural details make the surroundings seem part of the design.
