My sister and her fam just built and moved into their dream forever home. But after focusing so much on the inside of the house, they didn't feel like they had the time, energy or frankly the budget to focus on furnishing their beautiful new backyard patio space with equally beautiful, new decor. Who can relate? Enter, "Operation: Surprise Housewarming Gift!" I wanted to surprise my sister and give her the most incredible backyard patio makeover that perfectly fit with the coastal blue-and-white Hamptons style of the rest of her home, and do it all on a major budget! It's safe to say we succeeded and did it with ease.
The bare (and slightly sad) backyard patio space before our budget-friendly, coastal-inspired makeover!
The teak lounge chairs on the back patio were in seriously rough shape, but they have great bones! So we were able to easily spiff them up with a little sanding and cleaning.
The teak chairs before we sanded and cleaned them.
Using your finishing sander and 150-grit sandpaper, sand your furniture in the direction of the grain. We used 150-grit because we didn't need to get crazy with the sanding due to the fact that we aren't refinishing the furniture. As you can see from the pics, a little sanding does so much for the color, so we sanded any areas that were rough or splintering, and sanded until the worst parts of the greenish-black color were turned to that lighter grey. Super simple!

Post-sanding we followed all of the directions for the Golden Care Teak Wood Cleaner, and got all of those gross green/black spots out of the chairs, which still preserving that pretty grey patina that perfectly aged teak is known for.

The teak lounge chairs with their newly upholstered outdoor cushions and throw pillows! Because we couldn't afford all new lounge chairs and cushions, we restored the teak chairs and simply reupholstered the existing cushions and added a couple of beautiful throws to coordinate. To upholster it all perfectly, we used Calico Corners. Here are the fabrics we used:

LOUNGE CHAIRS

20"x20" PILLOW
  • Sunbrella fabric Spectrum in color "Indigo"
  • Contrast Welt: Sunbrella fabric Canvas in color "White"

12"x22" PILLOW
  •   Sunbrella fabric Spectrum in color "Denim"
Next we added some uber affordable furniture touches, like these woven blue and white bistro bar stools from Target. They're a knockoff of some much more expensive versions and frankly, I think they'll be more durable than their high-priced counterparts.
More affordable decor touches, all from Target. The table matches the bar stools!
Affordable, oversized woven baskets from Target add some warmth and texture to the space and do a great job of holding essentials like towels or some much-needed greenery.
More affordable decor touches from Target. These pineapple cocktail cups look and feel much more high-end than their price tag would indicate!
