This week my kids went back to school...and while I know it's late August and all- have you seen all the pumpkins and fall decor EVERYWHERE?!? Who am I kidding, it was starting to appear in late July, but that's another story. Now don't get me wrong, I love fall as much as the next gal! My birthday is in October, and although I'm not a fan of pumpkin spice everything (hopefully we can still be friends icon ) fall is really my favorite time of year. But I also live in North East Ohio, where summer is really only 3 months long (when we're lucky) and then it's back to cold. And this girl wants to soak up all the warm sunny weather we have left of summer! So instead of pulling out all the pumpkins just yet, and in case you're not quite ready to either- I thought I would show you how I'm decorating for the last days of summer this year.

I started with the idea of sunflowers- since I had a few lying around from another project, and they always make me think of warm and sunny summer days.  The colors are still bright and summery feeling, but also perfect for a slow transition into fall decor.  And since I love blue/teal glass, I wanted to add a fun pop of blue with the mason jars to compliment the flower color, while keeping everything else neutral and rustic.
I already had the sunflowers, but I needed a few more flowers to fill in the space.  So I found these Zinnia type flowers that were similar looking to my sunflowers.
One tip for making your faux flower arrangements look like the more expensive ones, is to remove the greenery/leaves on the flowers you are using.  I sometimes find the prettiest faux flowers in the cheaper section of the craft store or even the dollar store, but the leaves they put on the stems makes the whole thing look really cheap- and that's not the look we're going for.
For an easy fix...just remove the leaves from the stems and use a different kind of greenery to spruce it up.  I love doing this with my faux floral's, and it makes a big difference!
Next I divided up the flowers and greenery into bundles and tied them with twine to keep them together.  Since I'm not stuffing the mason jars with flowers, this helps the flowers to stay up right in the jars.
For a table runner I used brown packing paper, cut and decorated with a sharpie!  So easy and inexpensive- and I love the simple rustic look of it.
I also used one of the wooden log slices I have hanging out in my garage for just such occasions!  Everyone has wood slices in their garage...right?!? icon
I then added a little extra greenery around to finish it off.
I love the colors and the way it brightens up my dining room!  It's the perfect way for me to hang onto summer a little longer.  And bonus- the sunflowers will be a great transition into fall decor when I'm ready.  So, it's pretty, and cost effective!!
