I have a small laundry room that is the only access to my back deck and yard. I’ve lived in my home now over three years now and just hated the mess of open shelving and various brooms and mops showing. It’s a small room with no options of adding more space, so I decided to use the 18” of space between the dryer and open shelving. I decided a rolling broom closet would be the perfect solution. And I decided while I was doing all this to go ahead and paint the cabinets over the washer and dryer. I had already purchased bins for the open shelving and it made a big difference. The updates just completed the look I was hoping for.
Open shelving before adding bins
I began this journey by purchasing bins from Amazon that would fit perfectly into the open shelving. The bin storage made a huge difference.
Space between the shelving and the dryer
I then measured the opening space by depth, height and width. There is a small overhang at the top of the shelving, so it limited the height of my rolling broom closet.
Only need to buy five pieces of lumber
After taking my measurements multiple times, purchased lumber materials at my local building center.
Ripped the 16” down to 14” on table saw
There was no need to shorten the height of any of the boards, but I did need to rip the width of the 16” board to 14”.
Lining up the three sides
It’s nice having a work bench to put the sides and back together. I used a nail gun to keep everything lined up and the pocket screws to secure tight fitting of the boards.
Top and bottom secured with pocket screws
Added the top and bottom using nail gun.
Final version, minus rollers and paint.
When the unit was completed, I gave it a primer, three coats of paint and added the rollers.
Preparing cabinets for paint
I worked on the cabinets at same time I was painting the rolling broom closet. First I scrubbed the cabinets and doors with TSP, then sanded, primed and painted.
Rolling broom closet, open
The fit in the open space was perfect and all my brooms, mops and tripod clothes hanger fit in perfectly into my rolling broom closet.

Finally, all my work paid off. Now the small laundry room looks so much better and makes me very happy. For some color, I did add a framed print to the wall.
Old IKEA step stool
This is the IKEA step stool I had purchased 20 years ago. I had painted it and upholstered it but now looks out of place in the laundry room.
Just added some color
Went to Walmart and bought a yard of material and re-upholstered
Now my old IKEA stool looks right at home in the laundry room.

What is the size of your laundry room. Its looks about the size of mine and I would like to put two cabinets in mine and a rolling broom closet. It would end up looking similar to yours when completed.

But your not going to use it to climb up on, with wheels, right?

Genius broom closet!!! People make this type of storage to use the space on the side of kitchen appliances, but I would not put food in such a place that could get too warm, from the head generated by the appliance motors. However, as a broom closet? Sheer genius. I love it. Best idea I've seen in a long time.

Wahoo! Finally, a solution for my tiny space! Thank you for the wonderful instructions . I have no closet space for cleaning tools and am tired of them being in the open. This will work!
