Salvaged Door Repurposed Into Trash Can Screen

What do you do with a DIY repurposing project that's no longer carrying its weight? We took ours out to the trash--to make a screen to hide the eyesore that our trash cans are!
Two years ago, we made this coffee table from a door we found at a salvage yard. Problem was, it didn't really fit in our living room. Even though we loved doing this project, we knew we had to let it go.
Luckily, my partner in DIY crime has great creative visions. Where I saw a problem, he saw a solution.
In addition to the problem of what to do with a table that held only sentimental value, we also had the problem of this mess on the side of our house. It was an eyesore from the street.
In less than a day, he took the old table and a pile of scrap lumber and turned it into a trash can screen/planter--which cost us nothing! (Well, we did buy a few plants for it.) But, we're sure we could make this whole thing for less than $50.00.
He used the old table top for the base of the door (you can see it peeking out from behind in this shot) and the old table side for the front of the planter box. The planter box gives the screen weight so it won't topple over in windy weather.
For details on the how-tos, click on over to the blog post (link at the bottom).
We really couldn't be more pleased with this thrifty, green solution to two problems.
And we're guessing our neighbors are pretty pleased that we finally covered up our side-of-the-house mess, too. :-)

Was that area suppose to be a side driveway for access to the rear of the property?

Love it. Question did y'all put a sealer on the wood to protect it from the weather?

would look better painted to match house colours. It looks rather a ‘sore thumb’ at present.

It looks 100% better than it did before! Great job! I like the contrast between the house and fence. No need to paint it at all!
