How to make a HIMMELI?

First of all, what is a Himmeli? Well, the Himmeli are distinctive ornaments of Nordic decoration and are characterized by their geometric structure. They are pendants coming from typical Sweden and Finland that were originally made with very thin pieces of cane and that had different geometric shapes.

Himmeli have become key pieces to decorate and there are many ways to create them. In this tutorial I will show how to make them using straws.

You will need 4 straws in its original size and 8 pieces of 4 inches.

Note: If at any time the wire is not enough to continue, simply add another piece , attach the two ends and continue

To form the base of the himmeli

Cut a piece of wire long enough and insert 4 straws (4 inches) and join the two ends of the wire interlacing them to make the closure.

A square has been formed that will be the base of the himmeli. From the base will work the bottom of this piece and then the top.

When you do the closing of the base, join the two wires so that it becomes one.

Now insert two straws (4 inches) that will form a triangle and pass the wire to take it to the other corner of the base from where you will work the third straw of the inverted pyramid of the bottom part of this himmeli.

Insert the third straw and move it to the center.

Personally I like to give one or two turns with the wire between those that I already have in position as it gives firmness to himmeli.

Pass the wire to take it to the other corner. Insert the fourth straw of the inverted pyramid bottom part and make the closure giving one or two turns between the four straws and then take the wire to one of the corners of the base. (the square)

As you can see, a pyramid has formed towards the bottom and the wire is in position to continue the top part.

Insert two original size straws into the wire and take them to the next corner. (same process that was done in the inverted pyramid of the bottom part of this himmeli).

The wire is already in the other corner from where the third straw is going to be inserted and take it to the center to join it with the other two.

Insert the fourth and last straw and place it in position. Pass the wire and close it with one or two turns in the corner to fix and finish the himmeli. .

To hang them, as these pieces do not have much weight, I simply glue a decorative washer on top and from there I hung them!

As you can see, the joints do not look very nice because the union between straws and the wires are very noticeable.

To correct this, apply hot glue (silicone) on the joints. This will give you a metal look with welded joints after it is painted.

Paint the himmeli using this type of paint if you want to look like these I show you below.
