I hate carpet! So I ripped it up and installed Pergo laminate (LOVE!!). But what about the stairs? Installing laminate would have cost over $1000 (no thanks!) So I combined home-talkers ideas with a few of my own, and viola! Slip free, custom stairs.

Cut up old wood blinds for risers

First, carpet had to go. I had also replaced the old wood-look blinds. I measured riser height and while watching true crime tv (an addiction) I cut up old blinds with heavy duty shears for risers.

Measure and cut stair treads to fit.

I glued the cut pieces of wood blinds to the risers. I found slip free vinyl stair treads that I liked online, and measured and cut to fit.

Gorilla glue on back of treads.

Glue treads to stairs.

It was slow going until everything was cut, then install was pretty fast. I used nails on underside of treads since the glue didn't always grab as well as I wanted.

Almost done.

One set down, one to go.

Added quarter round for looks.

I bought vinyl quarter round since it is easy to work with and didn't need paint. I used a cheap little miter saw/box to cut quarter round to fit - this wasn't necessary but I liked the finished look.

Voila.

Would the slip proof vinyl treads work for dogs? Hate carpet but haven't w replaced it on the bigger staircase because our dog will slip down the 2 stairs I did replace.

This would be so hard to keep clean! Every little slot would get dirty!

I agree Michele. I have spent so much time trying to clean the depressions in vinyl through the years that if it has anything similar I would avoid it like the plague! I also hate dark colors unless you live where you will have no dirt tracked onto it. We colored out deck with a dark brown (It was not what we had thought we were getting but went ahead and used it. What a mistake that was. it showed every footprint, you couldn't keep it clean so it always looked grungy, to the point that my husband spent a week sanding it all off and we did as I had always done before, and Sealed it leaving it natural wood.

I've been trying to reduce the broken blinds "cemetery" (courtesy of ALL the dogs!) in my garage, and this stair idea is brilliant! I loved this post even more when I saw the true crime part - literally the exact same thing I have on while doing anything 😆
