My home is old and is lath and plaster so hanging things on the wall it’s a real headache I’m always looking for ways to get art up on the wall without having to hang it. So it only made sense to spruce up my fireplace mantle. I had some tongue groove hardwood laying around, a large black frame and some wooden family letters. So I guess you could say I went to work.

Hardwood planks glued

I cut and glued my tongue and groove planks together the size of my frame. Let dry for a day and began to stain in grey.

After stain

Once I have the stain on I knew I need to distress it a little. And it was heavy! So good thing it was going to be a leaning framed art.

After light sanding

I also needed to send off some of the glue that had dripped through, small areas that I hadn’t seen prior to staining.

Classic gray stain

Here is the stain I put over the top. On clearance typical me!

Tiny l brackets

Once the staining the glue is dry I flipped it over and put it in the black frame glued it to the frame. I also used a little L bracket to secure it. It took two brackets to fill secure.

Family letters I bought at discount

Now I pulled out the family letters I had bought it discount at the thrift store. They were a little faded so I felt that I needed to touch them up with black paint.

Touching up letters

I just use my basic acrylic black pain since I knew it was going to be interior use.

Centering letters

I laid out the letters to get them all centered I used a ruler that has a level on it and other rulers on the side to make sure it was all centered.

Nifty glue

Here is the glue I used on project

Here it is all glued down.

Let the Drive for 24 hours not to get drippage.

Finish project family sign love it

Finish project family sign love it. This is an easy project and it was fun to do I have a large area on my mantle that needed something and this does it since I can’t hang it up I can always lean it. Hope you enjoy.
