Upcycled Doily Angel Wings Ornament

I love to make a new ornament out of something old for the Christmas tree every year. Then when I get the ornaments out to decorate the tree they trigger memories of Christmases past. Last year I upcycled old road maps to make lovely map heart ornaments (see them here). This year I decided to make some gorgeous angel wings for my tree out of an old doily and some denim.

What you need to make these angel wings are some old cloth doilies or a bit of lace. Garden wire and a denim seam or belt loop from an old pair of jeans.

On my blog (link at the end), there is a template for some angel wings. You can download and cut these out or simple draw your own. Then pin your angel wings to a cork board using small nails.

Next, shape the wire into the wing shapes by wrapping it around the nails.

Remove the wire wing shapes from the nails and then glue them onto the doily.

Once the glue is dry cut the wired wings out of the doily leaving a small margin.

Wrap these edges around the wire and using more glue, stick them in place. You can use small pegs to hold the doily down as it dries.

Next, fix your wings together by twisting the wire.

To hide where the wires joined, I stuck the petal from a large pine cone to the front of the wings. I then made a loop from the denim seams and stuck this to the back.

I think angel wings make a lovely ornament and I have made a few of these doily ones to hang on my tree. This isn't the first time I've made angel wings as a Christmas decoration, in the past I've made some lovely feather ones out of old shuttlecocks (see here).

Cute idea. Being impatient and slightly lazy I'm wondering if I could just modpodge or starch the doily wings and not have to use the wire. ?

There was an earlier post of doilies made into cute bowls to be meant for Barb, and I was wondering what the reason was for these "angel wings" not being cleaner?

Very pretty. I am thinking that one cut down the middle of the doily in an S shape, kind of like the yin/yang curve might also work. Doilies are a treasure handed down from our loved ones. Not many people make them by hand any more.

Like your idea except for the pine cone shell, which reminded me of an insect (I don't mean any offense). I appreciate doily ideas though, since I can't get rid of the ones my Mom made.

They were vintage doilies so coloured. I went with the pinecone for the rustic look but you could use gem stones.
