One of my favorite things about shopping the holiday clearance sales is finding items for other projects. It’s amazing how much of the holiday decor can be repurposed for different craft projects. I don’t always know what I’ll use an item for in the future but at 50%-90% off, I’m willing to stock up on the possibility that it will become something unique in the future.

This is one story of treasure from clearance.

It Started with $1.25

The minute I spotted this metal bird in the Christmas clearance section of the local Hospice store for $.25, I knew it would be used for any number of projects. And, the metal plaque was $1 in the Holiday pet gift section of Hobby Lobby.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought the bird was perfect and, as luck would have it, it fit perfectly on the metal plaque. (Note: It was merely coincidence that the bird was going on a sign that contained the word “cat”.)

The Alpaca Made Me Do It

A few months ago, I visited a local alpaca farm and took a class on needle felting. Yes, I have become obsessed with the therapeutic nature of felting and a heart was a perfect item to make for the Valentine project.

Embellish My Heart

There is no better time than Valentine’s Day to add glitz to a heart. My craft supply had red/silver beads and a small metal “love” token. Perfect for this project.

Red Chalk Paint to the Rescue

With apologies to the cat, the metal plaque was covered with two coats of red chalk paint.

Wax Once, Wax Twice

The chalk painted metal plaque was waxed with Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax. The metal bird had a light smudge of Gilder’s Paste Wax applied to the wing outline.

Every Project Needs the Glue Gun

Starting with the metal plaque at the bottom, the bird was glued to the plaque and the heart was glued to the bird.

Every Valentine Needs a Sentiment

My craft supply had a book of paper sticker quotes and this one seemed perfect for the theme.

Ready for Cupid

The back of the plaque had a easel stand and hanging brackets so it’s perfect for a table or a wall. Happy Valentine’s Day!
