How to Make a Wooden Riser
On a recent junkin' excursion, I picked up an old piece of cypress and a few spindles. I didn't have a project in mind when I bought them, but knew they would be good for something. I started thinking about what I could do with them and thought they would make the perfect wooden riser. So that's what I decided to do with them and I'm going to give you a step-by-step of how I did this.
First, you will want to cut your spindle (or whatever you decide to use for legs), into 4 even pieces. I cut mine to be 3″ long. Once they were all cut, I sanded the edges to make sure they were nice and smooth so they would sit evenly on a flat surface.
After the legs were ready, I put them aside and prepared the board. The hubs sanded it for me and then I put a coat of clear wax on it to protect the wood.
If you are planning to use it for food items, it would be better to seal the wood with a natural oil, such as hemp oil.
Now it’s time to attach your legs to the board. Predrill a 1/2″ depth into the bottom of each leg in order to countersink your screws. Apply a small amount of wood glue to the end of the leg that will attach to the board and screw into the board. Repeat these steps for each of the four legs.
Now turn your board over. You’re done! Was that not the easiest thing ever? You will want to make sure that all of your legs are even and the riser doesn’t rock any. If it does, just sand down whatever leg(s) you need to make it even.

Very nice! Ha, ha...i thought the pic in the email with the 4 little sections of the spindle were 4 pepper shakers. I had to open it to see what you did to decorate your counter with pepper! Lol!

Why is it called a riser? I see that it is above the counter....but for what purpose?
Why not just glue the "legs"? That's what I did to a wooden tray that I painted & stenciled....use the tray on my counter as a catch-all for coupons, articles I want to keep, restaurant menus or whatever! Much easier than way you did it, but maybe there was a reason that I'm not seeing or get.
