Friendly Little Stool Makeover

On a recent trip to the thrift shop to donate some baby clothes, my sister spotted this sad little stool in the furniture section. Although my husband had forbidden me from buying any more furniture (I'm kind of a hoarder), I couldn't resist this little guy at the sweet price of $5.99 (I had a $2 coupon for donating clothes that day). I knew I could bring it back to life with a little TLC!
I got a couple of paint sample pots at Lowes and made up a batch of homemade chalk paint with calcium carbonate. After gently sanding down my stool, I gave it a coat of light gray chalk paint all over.
It looked better, but it was pretty plain. So next, I used my electronic cutting machine to make a fun stencil with contact paper. I planned to place this stool on my front porch, so I thought "hello" would be an appropriate message.
I used a pretty turquoise color to fill in the stencil and add some interest to the bottom cross bars of the stool as well.
I lightly sanded areas to give a minimally distressed look, and then I protected the finish with a coat of paste wax. I decided that the stool was too cute to leave outside, so I put it in my kitchen!
Now we have a friendly little stool for extra seating whenever we need it.

I am out of my mind too! I have a house overflowing with furniture and I bought 2 new chairs Saturday! I need to clear out some of this stuff with a good garage sale!
