When life gives you lemon napkins, you make adorable dinner plates. This DIY is a very simple, yet customizable way to make high-end looking dinner plates at a great price!

With Spring here, I am looking for a way to brighten up my home. So I used lemon napkins I found from Oh Happy Day, and (affiliate link) dishwasher-safe mod podge to create a very simple and customizable dinner plate. For just a couple of bucks per plate, I think these plates look much more high end than they are. These plates will take me through Spring and into Summer when real lemons are at their ripest and brightest.

I hope you enjoy customizing your own glass plates to take you through the different seasons. Follow the full tutorial below.

To make your own DIY patterned glass plate, you will need:

  • Pretty Patterned Paper Napkins. I purchased my lemon paper napkins from Oh Happy Day.
  • (affiliate link) Dishwasher-Safe Mod Podge
  • Glass Dinner Plate. I purchased mine from Dollar Tree for $1 each.
  • Scissors
  • Craft Paintbrush

Step 1: Cut out your favorite patterns from the paper napkins. It is important to cut neatly and create crisp lines since the lines will be obvious on the glass plate. Also try to remove any white space from the pattern so you create a pretty silhouette.

Step 2: Most paper napkins are made up of several layers. After you cut each silhouette (the extra layers make it easier to cut the silhouette), gently separate the layers until you have the one, image-printed layer.

Step 3: Determine the placement of the cut out silhouettes on to the plate. Then, take a picture of the placement or place them on the work surface in the order they will go.

Step 4: Ensure the glass plate is clean. You can clean it with a mixture of white vinegar and water to remove any excess dirt.

*You can find a full tutorial for homemade vinegar house cleaner on my blog.

Step 5: Turn the clean glass plate over. Take the good side of the paper napkin silhouette and apply a small amount of dishwasher-safe mod podge to it. Then attach the good side of the paper napkin to the bottom of the glass plate.

*To help keep your hands clean keep a wet towel and dry towel nearby. If your hands aren’t clean and dry the paper napkin will stick to you and your project will not come out as pretty as you intended.

Step 6: Paint a thin layer of the mod podge to the back of the printed napkin silhouette and onto the glass plate. Ensure all edges are painted down with mod podge. *Start your brush stroke in the middle and brush out so you remove excess glue and bubbles from the paper image.

Continue to cover the bottom of the glass plate with your images and mod podge.

Step 7: Once you paint mod podge onto all of the paper images, apply one very thin layer of the mod podge to the entire bottom of the glass plate.

*When applying the mod podge to the bottom of the plate, it is important to brush all of the strokes in the same direction so the mod podge dries nicely. It is also very important to apply a very thin layer (don’t add too much mod podge) so the plate is nice and clean when it dries.

Set the glass plate aside and let it dry for atleast one hour.

Step 8: Once the plate is dry, add another very thin layer of dishwasher-safe mod podge to the bottom of the plate.

Set the plate aside and let it dry for atleast an hour.

Repeat this step one more time.

Step 9: According to the dishwasher-safe mod podge packaging, set this project aside for 28 days to cure. I used my plates before the 28 days. I hand washed it and they were fine. However, If you want to add your plates to the dishwasher on the top rack, then I would wait the full 28 days.

After your plates have cured properly, it is time to add them to your favorite meal with friends, and enjoy them!

I love how my lemon plates pop on top of a white charger.

It would be so fun to create a Christmas scene or Valentine scene on top of a red charger! Whatever, you decide to create I hope you enjoy the process as much as I did!

  • I have covered the backs of the plates with seasonal fabric. I did not know there was dishwasher safe Mod Podge so the plates need to be hand washed. They look pretty with cookies or candy.
