Hang It on the Wall!

The first thing I did was sand the shellac layer off of this old paddle I had laying around. Notice how it kind of looks like a dog bone at the end? Well, I thought about cutting it to make it look straighter. Then I thought, let’s just see how it looks when it’s done!

I got on a roll and forgot to take pictures of the next steps so I’ll just explain it here.

Next I painted the entire paddle a country white color that I already had. I painted this with two coats to get good coverage. After the base coat dried, I taped off sections and added the aqua and navy blue colors. I didn’t measure where I put the taped sections. I just did what appealed to me. After two coats of these colors, I let it dry for a couple of hours. I took the tape off and sanded down the entire paddle for a distressed look.

This step is totally how you want your paddle to look and the colors you want to use. I just happen to have all of these colors on hand.

I wanted to add galvanized cleats and these knobs to the paddle. The knobs had a satin nickel finish like the middle one here, so I spray painted all of the knobs with a galvanized spray so they would match the cleats. There doesn’t look like there’s much difference in the picture, but trust me there was.

Then, I laid out the “hooks” on the paddle to get them spaced out. This step totally depends how many hooks you would want to put on your paddle.

This picture shows the holes for my hooks that I have already drilled. I just love these 3 colors together.

Here are the cleats and knobs attached.

On the back, I attached two “D” hooks like these at the ends for hanging. You could even attach a rope for hanging it also.

And here it is all ready to use. I really like the ease of use and how easy this was to do. This project is so versatile because you can use whatever you want as hooks and paint it whatever colors you want to. I had everything on hand, so with this project I didn’t have to go out and buy anything. If you did have to go out and buy hooks and a used paddle it would probably have a starting cost of about $20. (Depending on what kind of bargain shopper you are! 😉).

And, I’m not worrying about the “dog bone” end of the paddle. It usually will be covered up!
