Today I'm going to show you a simple DIY tutorial on how to make your own large, boho style, yarn wall hanging. There are no complicated macrame knots to learn, and it is so simple to make! It will look absolutely beautiful in a bedroom, over your bed, in your living room, or hallway. This is beautiful DIY decor that is simple for anyone to make - even if you aren't super crafty!

How to make your simple yarn wall hanging tutorial:

Materials needed for your DIY yarn wall hanging:

  • Driftwood - 2 feet long
  • wool blended yarn - I used 2 skeins of Lion Brand Yarn Lion Brand Wool-Ease Yarn - cut into 60 inch strands
  • barrel wood beads
  • crochet hook - I used size 6.5mm

This will be 2 feet wide and about 2 feet long when it is finished.

The most time-consuming part of making this boho style yarn wall hanging is cutting the yarn into 60 inch strands. You will need 15 bunches of 10 strands - making a total of 150, 60" long strands of this wool blend yarn. I needed to skeins of yarn to cut this much, but didn't use up both skeins completely.Honestly, you can use any yarn you have on hand in any color. I chose this wool blended yarn though because it was neutral and natural looking, and I hung it on a green wall. If you were going to hang it on a tan or gray wall, you may want to add a splash of accent color into your yarn bunches.

To make your simple yarn wall hanging, take one bunch of 10 strands and fold it in half. Then take the folded end and place that around the back side of the driftwood.

Then take the loop from the folded end and pull the rest of the yarn through that loop.

Pull it tight, and then you have completed your first warp around knot.

Take each of the other 14 bunches of 10 strands of yarn, and create wrapping knots with them as well all the way down the length of the driftwood.

Now its time to embellish these wrap around knots of yarn with either braids or beads. For the first bunch, braid three times and tie off with a knot. Then skip the next bunch (we will put a wood bead on every other bunch) and braid 7, 9, 11 times, making each one a little bit longer, and tie off each one with a knot. Continue down to the end, this time getting a bit shorter, back to 9, 7, and 3 braids.I do advise having your hanging on the wall while you braid so you can measure and be sure that the opposing strands be the same length. This yarn can drastically change in length depending on how hard you pull it, so having gravity on your side while it is hanging will give you a true proportion of how the yarn will hang.

In between two braids, you will have a wooden bead. To get the bead through each of the 10 strands of yarn, take your crochet hook and place it in the bead.

Then wrap all of the yarn around the hook and pull it all through the bead. This will be a tight bunch that has to fit through a tight hole, so you may need to really bunch op the yarn and twist a bit to get it to pull through.

You will want a tight fit of yarn inside the bead though so that the bead will stay at the height you put it at.

Put the wooden beads on the non-braided yarn bunches and move them to the proper height to create the "V" pattern you see here. This is the final look you are going for, so use this image as your reference while you are braiding and placing your beads. I recommend having a yardstick close by so you can measure and have a straight edge to follow to be sure you are getting the exact "V" shape you are looking to get.

One thing to note that since the wood beads are not knotted in place, they can move up and down. Your yarn may hang a bit different depending on the humidity of the room it is in, and you may need to adjust the height of the beads to keep them at the level you would like them to be at.
