Hi guys!

Here is a fun project for those who start with woodworking.

My 28 year old son wanted to learn so I helped him to build his first wood project! I guided him, but he did everything himself, except for the stain and the cushions.

Do not be fooled by its ordinary look ... Things are not always what they seem to be! icon

The only things you need for this project is :

  • Electric drill.
  • Some screws 2" long.
  • #8 bit.
  • 1/8" drill bit.
  • Saw (if you don't have one, ask your local wood store (like Home Depot) to cut the wood for you.
  • 2 or 3 hours of your time!

If you have to go through your hardware store to have them cut what you need... Here's what you should be asking for... If you have the tool (miter saw, round saw, etc.) I would encouraged you to mark and cut, instead of measuring and cut. It will save you a lot of troubles and pain! icon

So, first things first, screw the seating planks (B) to the legs (D).

Always use a drill bit to make a pre-hole to prevent the wood from splitting.

Make sure the 2 external edges of each parts are totally aligned.

Screw the "crossbar" (C) on both seating planks (B) to maintain them together.

Screw the 3 remaining parts (C) on both sides of the bench.

And finally, do the same thing to the front and the back of the bench with planks (A).

Personally, I chose to stain it with black opaque exterior stain so that it matches my decor. You are free to choose your color or leave it on the natural wood.

Voilà ! You're done !

But wait ... There is a backrest on the first picture... Ah! It's magic!

I added a shelf with folding supports. My little bench looks like a sofa most of the time, but may turn into a lunch area when we have guests. The children are too happy to be able to eat there. It's their little secret place!

I made a skirt and cushions for the bench to complete his "sofa" look.

Hope you enjoyed this post.

Have a great summer! icon

Are the 4X4' enough to keep the bench from tipping?

Love the creation. I'm a little confused about the measurements for A & E

    The measurements are the same.

Where are they separated? Are the A's used as the bench top and the E's as the back rest?

Awesome project. Your grandson will keep building. My grandson asked for a hammer, nails and a piece of wood so he could practice. Don't know what he was practicing but he is 25 now and designs circuit boards and loves to build things with me. It started with nails who knew.
