Decoupaging Furniture
I found this on the side of the road doing the school run one day.
One person's trash is anothers gold.
So I decided to paint this one rose gold but wanted to make it a little different.
Decoupage came to mind.
Decoupage is a bit like paper mache but on furniture.
Firstly I sanded the top as it was a bit water damaged. Making it smooth again.
I also removed the screw stoppers as o prefer to see the screws.
Sugar soaped to clean it up and waited for it to dry.
To decoupage you will need tissue paper with patterns. I opted for this rose gold stripe.
Because of the white and gold lines I needed to do a white base on the top.
There was a bit of water damaged to the legs too so I decided not to just paint the top of the table/stool in order to seal it.
One of the legs had lost a screw and had been fixed in another way.
I chose to fill this with wood filler.
Scrape the amount needed into the whole and smooth over. Keep doing this in stages till full. Once dry you can sand off any excess.
I cut out the area I wanted to use of the paper.
Then removed the second layer.
You know all tissue/paper napkins are double layered? You need to remove the second layer so your only left with the pattern.
Top tip. It's tricky and extra delicate to cut the tissue once it's been pulled apart. I found cutting it along the edges while the tissue was still folded. Then removing the second layer.
Paste on a generous amount of modge podge glue and carefully place the paper on it
Use cling film to press over and smooth it down.
It's delicate so if you use your hands the tissue will rip.
Wait for it to dry before you paint over it. Or again it will rip
Keep going.
Top tip. Use a fresh but of cling film each time.
To discard of any over hangs use a light sanding sheet or block. Gently sand in a downwards motion only. Don't press too hard or you'll damage your paint work. You'll only need to do it once or twice before the paper rips away.
One dry paint over the top of the tissue in modge podge to seal.
Ta da!

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
Iād like to decoupage a small table using old (well-aged) sheet music. Do you think it would work? Any tips?
You say don't use your hands to press down the film over your tissue paper, or it will rip. What did you use instead?
