Herbs are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They add beauty and fragrance to our garden. And, there’s nothing better than fresh picked herbs to add flavor to our food. Add even more beauty to your garden by creating these easy DIY plant markers.

To create the plant markers you'll need...

Oven Bake Clay

Rolling Pin

Cookie Cutters

Metal Skewers

Alphabet Beads

Cookie Sheet

Parchment Paper

Knead the clay until it is soft and easy to work with. Use a rolling pin to roll out the clay until it is approximately 1/4 inch in thickness.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes in the clay. To add more interest, use a different shape for each herb.

Once the shapes are cut, place them on a parchment covered cookie sheet, then press a metal skewer into the back of the clay.

Once the skewers are in place, turn the markers over and press alphabet beads into the clay to spell out the names of the herbs. Bake on a parchment covered cookie sheet in a 275 degree oven for 15 minutes. Don't worry... the beads won't melt.

Once the plant markers have cooled, stick the skewers into the dirt to create a unique way to identify your herbs.

Awesome idea... just add food coloring or paint and we can draw the names of the herbs on and seal... I won’t have to remake markers...

Are these safe for outside? Will they hold up to weather?

OMG, I love it and see possibilities beyond. Pinned for later use and looking forward to it. It's my favorite type of project--no special tools, hi-end look. Thank you for the inspiration.

I live in an apartment with no outdoor space, but you inspired me to make decorative picks for my houseplants. Thank you.
