If you read our previous post about installing our copper/macramé plant hangers, you will know we do not have green thumbs. Because we don’t know who watered the plants last, we can’t keep them alive. We also don’t always remember which herb is which from just looking at them. Here’s our solution to both of those problems.

Before

What you will need for this project:

- Large popsicle sticks

- Painters tape

- Black chalk board paint – I used the Disney one which I found at Walmart

- Paint brush

- Chalk

- Stencils (optional – but really nice!)

This is a very simple project that leaves you lots of room to put your creative stamp on it! Abby was recently given this stencil set that her Grandfather used back in his school days. This project was a perfect place to put them to use. (Also happy birthday to him! He turns 96 the day we are writing this!!)

Steps:

Start by taping off the bottom of the popsicle sticks with painters tape. This is to make sure that none of the painted portion is in the soil. Now again, we do not know much about plants, but we figured painting the whole thing then sticking them into the soil of something we might eat maybe wasn’t the best course of action!

Next, let’s get painting!

You can use any brush you like for this project. We used a chalk paint brush, but you could even use a sponge brush from the dollar store.

You’ll want to let each side dry a few hours before turning over and repeating on the opposite side. We did 3 coats on each side. If we had been clever at the time, we would have painted both sides at once and stuck them in some soil standing them upright while they dried as to move things along faster. But alas, we took our sweet time!

Either way you do it, fast or (painfully) slowly, your next step is to get creative! We used these stencils and chalk to write the name of the herb, and we are using the back of the stick to write when it was last watered. Yay! No more over/underwatering these fragile herbs.

So you must remove the stick to write on it each time to write down the date watered. Then to check it you have to pull it out to check the date, along with dirt....did I miss something...this sounds like more work.

Hi you guys first of all, that's one cute baby, so this is a fantastic idea I like having green live plants in house but if you don't mind I would hang them up to a wooden rod that won't bend or bow it would look nice. Thanks

Hey! Thanks so much. We actually address this in our post about the planters . Check it out and thanks so much for the feedback. A wooden rod would look great!
