Have you ever noticed that some of the best projects are sitting at yard sales just waiting to be discovered?

And when you walk into the yard, they start waving at you and calling your name.

Just like this hutch did.

Of all the yards in all the world, I found this hutch.

Here's the entire before and after transformation.

Here's where we started. This is the yard sale hutch that I found for only $3 at a recent sale. It had it's problems.

  1. The doors were coming off the hinges.
  2. The entire back of the piece was missing.
  3. The doors didn't have fronts.
  4. There wasn't any hardware on the doors.

The hutch had problems.

No worries.

I had solutions.

Step 1: We reattached the hinges where we could and replaced the hinges where necessary.

Step 2: We added primed plywood to the back of the piece with finish nails.

Step 3: We added new door fronts to the door frames on either side of the hutch.

Step 4: We repaired the cracks in the wood with wood putty. To repair the cracks, we applied wood putty according to the directions on the packaging. Let the wood putty sit until dry. Then we sanded the putty smooth.

Step 5: We got the piece ready for painting. We caulked the wood hutch where necessary and sanded any rough edges.

Step 6: We primed the entire hutch.

Step 7: We painted the hutch with Sherwin-Williams Extra White.

Step 8: We lightly sanded the entire piece to distress the finish.

Step 9: We added the crystal knobs on either side in the remaining holes (we added putty to fill in the holes because we were replacing the handles with knobs).

And now?

The hutch looks like this.

Prettier than it could have ever imagined itself when it was hanging out at that yard sale.

Isn't it amazing what a little furniture makeover can do.

I have old French provincial dresser I want to refinish. My walls are light grey, carpet is dark grey. I painted it a cream but it’s driving me nuts how it doesn’t match. What color and paint would you recommend?
