A wall sconce that’s perfect for a narrow space.

Wall Sconce

Have you ever looked at a space in your home and found it challenging to decorate? I did for a long time! I have a wall, more like an 18 ft column, between my formal dining room and family room that I could never find wall decor that I was happy about, until this! The width of this wall is not quite 2 ft and this sconce worked perfectly and the best part of this DIY project was that it was super easy! I got the idea from an IG friend.

The items

I knew I wanted something long for the wall so I chose to make the panel 4 ft long. All I needed for this project was a wood panel, decorative wood molding, Annie Sloan white chalk paint, Minwax wood finish stain in Provincial, rags for stain application, wood glue, nail gun (optional) and my antique brass sconce.

My knotty wood panel

I love knotty wood, so I knew my choice of wood was going to include at the very least one, luckily I found one with 3! The wood panel was cut to 4 ft in length by 8 inches wide and the molding was also cut to 4 ft. I used 1 for each side of the panel. I used wood glue to adhere the molding to the panel. It dried pretty quickly but it can also be nailed down with a nail gun. I tried nailing it but the glue seemed to work great.

Minwax stain application

The first step to adding the color was to apply the stain. I made sure I had full coverage and I applied it with a brush.

The paint application

While the stain was still wet, I brushed white paint over the stain and wiped it off with an old rag. This gave the look of an aged piece of wood.

Stain and Paint

This is a closer look after applying the stain and paint. I think it looks like an old piece or weathered piece of wood. I really liked the end result.

The End!

Here is the finished wall sconce, I love it! I hung a vintage bronze sconce directly onto the panel and then hung the entire piece onto the wall. This was a fast and easy DIY project, I hope you find inspiration from it. If you’d like to see more of what I do, please visit me on IG at https://www.instagram.com/mycreativekneads/

Nice project. I see you have several black accent pieces in your kitchen. Would painting the metal sconce black make it pop and tie in to the black accents you already have going?

Hi, thank you! I’m sure it could be painted but it’s an antique bronze piece and I really like it in its original state. Maybe one day I will get myself to paint it.
