One day the Hubs and I were out for a Sunday drive. We love riding dirt roads and seeing old farmhouses. Sometimes we even get a peek at nature. For instance, deer, cows, and goats! While driving down one dirt road, we saw this spool laying on the side of the road. I am assuming it probably blew out of someone’s truck.

Spool Before

We threw it in the back of the truck and continued our drive.

The Repurposed Wood Wire Spool Makeover

Once we arrived at home, I took our shop vac and used the blower option to remove any dirt and grass from the spool before I brought it inside.

I noticed the center was cardboard and had extensive water damage. I was so sad because I thought the only parts to be salvaged was the wood top and bottom. But Hubs to the rescue!

Replacing the Cardboard

We had recently finished a custom farm table for a client. They requested 4x4 legs. Therefore, the Hubs had a few left-over pieces. He cut the 4x4 to the length that was needed to replace the cardboard.

He then used the existing screws and attached the top and the bottom. I was so excited that I would be able to use the ENTIRE piece!

The Idea

The next day I begin work on my project. I had given it some thought the night before and decided to use it as a coffee station for my countertop. We have limited space, but I wanted a place to display coffee mugs. Here are two that my husband created for me:

I chose a stain for this project since it was entirely wood. And check out the wording on the top! I thought it was so unique. Therefore, it would stay.

Adding the Stain

The color stain I chose was Special Walnut. I had it leftover from our table project. With that being said, I did not have to buy anything for this makeover.

Stained Spool

I gave the spool one coat of stain using my chip brush and wiping off any access. It was left to completely dry overnight.

For displaying the coffee mugs, I used hook screws that I had in my stash. I used four for this project. I turned it upside down and screwed them into the wood.

Screw Hooks

I used the two coffee mugs the Hubs made on top as well as four for hanging on the hooks. He even made me the cute sign!

This is adorable!! I wanted to try it, but when I clicked the link for the spool, it was $150, a bit out of my price range - I have never been lucky enough to find one of these spools on the side of the road, so does anyone know a resource where you can get spools like this for cheap?? I'd actually like different sizes of them, too - that would be great!! Any info would be helpful, thanks :)
