Vintage Silverware Art
Old, mismatched silverware can easily be found if you don't have a stash of it yourself. This simple, easy DIY project elevates the humble fork, spoon and knife to unique art status. A great way to enjoy some of those vintage, sentimental pieces everyday!
Gather some vintage or old silverware and a drill. If lots of details, flowers and scrolly patterns are your style, go with those. If mid-century mod is more your look, choose silverware that is straighter and more simple.
Choose a word you want to spell out with the silverware. Straight-lined letters will be easier than anything curvy. The word "EAT" is a perfect word for some kitchen art. Play around with how you want the silverware to face and overlap. You can copy this layout if you want! Snap a pic on your phone of the layout you decide on, so you can remember.
Choose a board to attach the silverware to. We chose some old chippy green beadboard to harmonize with the vintage green color in our kitchen. If you're going for a more mod or farmhouse look, something simpler and sleeker would work. Maybe a black or white painted smooth board.
Using a ball peen hammer, flatten the silverware ends and curves. You can leave the designed end the same.
Decide where you're going to attach the silverware to the board. The necks are too skinny and the spreading part of the knives was hard to drill through. Try not to interrupt the pretty designs too much either. Drill holes in the silverware at your anchor points.
Using non-shiny rounded screws, anchor the silverware in place, overlapping joints as desired.

This is a great idea! It would really pop if the backdrop was a darker color to make the "silver" stand out.

Yes, you could totally change the vibe by the background you use and the silverware. It could go much more modern if you used a more simple, streamlined flatware.
