Easy Accessible Storage for Deep Cabinets

A while back I custom built a pantry cabinet for my kitchen. Since this cabinet was going to be fairly deep I knew I would be adding storage racks to the doors for easily accessible extra space for vitamins, supplements and small bottles or miscellaneous items. Here's what I came up with!

I started with a basic drawing of what I wanted and gathered all of my scraps of wood that I would need. I wanted this project to be low or no cost and I was fine with a little bit of a rough or rustic look but these easy racks can definitely be built with nicer materials as well.

I knew I wanted a long box with slats on the front. Once I had all of my pieces cut to size I glued and nailed them. When my first rack was done I tweaked the design as needed and then continued to cut my pieces for all of my final racks (5 total).

Here is the side by side of my mockup (left) vs my final design (right).

In the second design I have a sturdier bottom and less slats to cut, glue, and nail. Once all 5 were nailed and glued I sanded any rough edges.

Time to paint!! To make things easy and quick I used white spray paint and gave each rack about 2-3 coats. The wood soaked up a lot of the paint and gave it an old worn look which I was pretty happy with!

I drilled clearance holes in each rack where I would be attaching them.

Next I attached them to the insides of my pantry cabinet doors. Make sure they are level and that you're using screws short enough to not pop through the door front!

One down, several more to go!! A couple notes: when I built this pantry cabinet I intentionally left the center shelves set back so that wherever I decided to put my racks, they wouldn't hit the shelves. You CAN still do this on cabinets with full depth shelving. Just make sure you install your racks where they won't hit the shelves. You also need to make sure you leave enough room on each side of the rack so it doesn't interfere with the other door closing and also doesn't hit the frame of the cabinet when you close the door.

Here they are! Perfect for storing small items and keeping them from getting lost or pushed to the back of your deep cabinets!
