Easy DIY White Washed Shutters To Add To A Window

To begin the project you will need 6 boards cut 16" long and 4 boards cut 7" wide. It is a great idea to sand the boards to make sure you have a smooth surface to paint.

I find painting the boards is easier before nailing the project together. So, I began with pouring white fusion mineral paint into a mason jar.

Because I was looking to have a white washed effect when I was finished with the project, I added an equal part of water into the paint I had poured into the mason jar.

Next is the most important part of the painting process. Make sure you take your time and mix the water and paint together.

Now is the fun part. Painting! I brushed the white wash paint left to right until I got the look I was trying to achieve, which was to allow the wood peek through the paint.

After the paint has had a chance to dry, it's time to assemble the shutters. I nailed the boards together with a joining board on the front (this is important to achieve the perfect shutter look). I gave about 2 inches from the bottom of the shutter before nailing the joining board on. I did the same thing on the front of the top of the shutter giving the shutters two support boards.

After the shutter is assembled, I painted the support boards with the same paint to water mixture as I did the other boards and allowed them to dry.

It's time to attach your shutters to the window (or in our case an old window with new life as a mirror). These decorative hinges do just the right job. A few tiny screws and you've completed your project.

Here's the shutters snugly attached to the mirror window and hung in my entryway. It came together pretty simply and I love the finished project.
