One of the most beloved hostess gifts or neighbor gifts during the holidays is Christmas potpourri in a jar. If you are looking for a sweet and simple gift for women in your life, then these mason jar Christmas potpourri gifts are the answer!

These are great gifts to have on hand just-in-case. They also make wonderful presents for co-workers, teachers, stocking stuffers, mail delivery person, hair dresser..... and many more!

You can use mason jars or other upcycled jars, such as spaghetti sauce jars. The jars we used had metal clasps known as metal bails and make for great keepsakes afterwards.

This potpourri recipe uses all natural ingredients. Many which might already be in your kitchen or backyard.

If you happen to have a crab apple tree, then this stovetop potpourri recipe is perfect for you! (Don't worry if you don't have crab apples or don't even know what they are. You can use regular apples.)

Here's the ingredients you'll need (makes one jar):

  • 1-3 clementines or small oranges
  • ¼ cup fresh or dried cranberries
  • Clusters of crab apples (found until early winter in many regions, if not available, use small apples or dried apple slices)
  • Rosemary sprigs (or use dried rosemary)
  • Small pieces from fir trees
  • Cinnamon sticks

Use whole fruit when possible, if it will fit in the jar. If you need to cut it up, do so right before gifting so that it is not a big mess inside from liquid and pulp.

After rinsing off any branches or herbs you got from outside, put everything in the jar. Cover with a lid and give within 24-48 hours.

Do NOT add water! It will make the ingredients start to break down and won't look too pretty!

Decorate your jar with ribbon, raffia, gift tags or other ornaments.

Include these instructions when giving the gift:

To use: Add ingredients in jar to 6 cups of water in a saucepan or crock pot. Bring to a boil and then turn down to a simmer for about 2 hours, keeping a close eye on the water level to ensure the pot does not dry out.
