Little Mittens Add Holiday Spirit to a Little Tree

My parents have reached the decision that most of us will face at some point in our lives. After 54 years of buying a fresh full-size Christmas tree each year, they have decided to switch to an artificial, table top tree. I respect and understand this decision, but it can be a difficult transition. For one thing, my parents are finding that a lot of their old ornaments are too big for this smaller tree. So I decided to make some little additions for their small tree to help them celebrate the Christmas season!

I thought that some little mittens, tied together, would be a cute addition to their new tree. I decided to make these mittens out of polymer clay, then tie them together with some curling ribbon or yarn.

There are many designs you can make for your mittens. These mittens take two colors of polymer clay.

I started by making a paper stencil for my mittens. You can find this stencil on my blog.

Then I rolled out a thin piece of my background color. I traced my mitten stencil twice on my rolled out clay to create a pair of mittens. Then I used a dull pencil to make cuff marks on the bottom of my mittens. I have full directions for this on my blog.

Next, I cut out the stripe that I had drawn on my mitten stencil. Then I rolled out another piece of clay in a contrasting color, and traced my stripe stencil on to it. I made two stripes, one for each of my mittens.

I gently placed my stripe on each of my mittens, carefully pressing it into the background so that it sticks.

Next, I rolled three tiny balls of my background color and put them in a line along my white stripe. I pressed these balls into the clay to create polka dots.

I rolled more little balls of my stripe color and pressed these around my mittens to create more dots.

When all my details were in place, I transferred my mittens to some foil and baked them according to the manufacturer's instructions. After baking, I let my mittens cool completely.

Once cool, I cut two pieces of curling ribbon, and tied two ends together in a bow. I took each of the loose ends and put them through the hole in one one my mittens, leaving a long tail. I tied the ribbon off in a knot and used some scissors to curl the long end.

I made another pair of these mittens featuring a poinsettia design. You can find the directions for these mittens on my blog.

We'll hang these mittens on the tree by resting the bow on a branch and letting the mittens hang down. But you could also use these cute mittens to decorate a wreath and to embellish a holiday gift!

This would be a great project to do with the kids. They can be so creative. And seeing their mitten/mittens hanging on the tree would make them proud.

Yes, definitely! Younger kids might need some help, but I'm sure they would love working with clay and making their own ornaments. Thanks so much for your comment!
