How to Make a Vertical JOY Porch Sign With an Unexpected 3D Effect!

Have you noticed vertical porch signs are all the rage?

Well, I wanted in this Christmas!

Gathering up two reclaimed wood fence planks and a couple of stencils, this came together really quickly!

But I desired to add an additional dash of cozy charm to an otherwise flat Christmas sign...

Here's what I ended up doing...

I am a collector of all things reclaimed wood, so fence planks are a standard in my shop.

I chose two, and gave them a light sand.

Next, I coated the planks in white paint.

Then I brought out some handy stencils that would ultimately get this job done easy!

Stencils used: Funky Junk's Old Sign Stencils HERE

  • Joy - Large Vertical
  • Large Ornament
  • Large Ornament Accessories
  • Buffalo Check - Medium (under its own listing)

The letters were stenciled in black and popped!

I also share a special tip on distressing easily... be sure to visit my blog post link below to learn more!

But I didn't stencil the O in Joy because I had other plans...

Instead, the Christmas Ball stencil was positioned to hang from the J, then stenciled in red.

Before I removed the ornament stencil, the Buffalo Check stencil was positioned on top, then stenciled in black.

Then I positioned the ribbon and stenciled it in red to hang the ornament.

BAM! Isn't that the cutest coziest ornament EVER?!

But I wasn't quite done there yet either...

Evergreen branches and a bow were attached to the ornament to give it a true 3D effect.

The boards were then joined together and here is the result! Quirky, rustic, and porch-ready-pretty!

So, do you prefer this Christmas Joy sign with the branches and bow best? Or...

... with just the bow?

You can see it without both in my blog post too!

But what I love most about this sign is the fact that it can be customized to whatever colours you are decorating with this season! Or perhaps you'd like to match yours to the exterior colours of your home? The options are limitless!

Using versatile stencils make sign-making easy. I have an even easier JOY sign inside my blog post link below!

I would love to buy some of your stencils, but the cost of shipping them to the US (East Coast) is pretty steep. Do you have a US distributor, or some other way to purchase to lower the shipping cost? PS: I love your blog... and all of the rusty junkiness makes me drool!! Thank you for sharing your awesome work & ideas with all of us 😊
