One of my gifts from Hometalk was a candle making kit. Every year I like to make some diy gifts for some of my family and friends who appreciate them, but I didn't want to just make a candle, let's face it you can go anywhere and buy scented candles and alot of people aren't into lighting them. Me of course I am a fan. So I was trying to come up with an idea to incorporate the wax and the scent and winter. I like the things I make to be able to be used the winter season . My inspiration came from my stash of Bath and Body Works bulbs.

Here are the supplies I used for this project. One bag of wax, scented bulb from B&BW, a bowl, yes there is two pictured here I used the bigger one, and a pot to put the wax in to melt.

Take a pot and fill halfway with water and bring to a rolling boil.

Take your wax and dump it into another pot. If you have a double boiler it is perfect for this project. If not you can improvise using a smaller pot or a strainer over your pot of water with a stainless steel bowl inside.

Once your water has boiled turn burner down to low heat and place pot with wax inside the pot with water. Using a wooden spoon stir wax to help melt.

Using a thermometer place in melted wax, the temperature of the wax needs to be between 185 and 200 degrees. Once the desired temperature is reached it is now time to add your scent.

So for this I chose the winter candy apple. I have a stock pile of these bulbs as I buy when they have their sales. Open and dump entire bottle into the wax and mix in well. This is key. Keep stirring until temp reaches the desired level again.

Next take your bowl you will be using. Either run under hot water or heat up in microwave for about a minute. You don't want the bowl to be cold or once the hot wax hits the cold bowl it sets to quickly which can cause air bubbles and rough wax . Do the bowl needs to be warm.

Once your bowl is warm, pour in hot wax.

While the wax is setting, gather what will be placed in the wax. I just cut some pieces off of a Christmas pic I had. You do not need alot.

Once you notice the wax beginning to set, about 15 to 20 minutes, place your cut pieces into the wax. If you place them too soon they will sink to the bottom. If this happens simply remove and heat wax again and start over. This is not a project you can leave unattended until you have your Christmas pics in the wax. Timing is everything!

Here is your wax setting.. this is about halfway through. Now you can leave it. It will take a few hours to set. Best to leave it over night.

To remove effortlessly from the bowl place in freezer for about 15 minutes. Bring out of freezer and turn upside down and the wax will slide right out. You may have a rough edge around the outside if you want to remove it take a sharp knife or exacto blade and gently trim. Your bowl is now complete. You can stop here and place on a little display stand for holding plates etc and you are done. I wanted to take further I had a look I was going for. Read on...

So I envisioned my bowl sitting on a branch. You might be saying where are you going to find a branch? It was quite easy actually. I live in the city and there is a park nearby so I made a trip there and to my surprise there were alot of broken tree branches. You want one that has 3 branches coming from the main branch. You are going to cut alot of this off.

This is what you should be left with.

Next you are going to cut a piece of wire. You will want a strong wire. To determine your length you will use your branch you just cut to determine this.

So take your wire and wrap from top branch around to the bottom branch.

Here is a side view, you will notice I curved the wire. Once you have desired length and position take a hot glue gun and glue around the wire just to secure in place.

I purchased this garland at my Dollarama you can get it in white or red berries I chose white. You are going to cut pieces and wrap around your branch and secure with hot glue gun. I also had a red cardinal from another project that I attached. This is optional.

Here it is with the garland and bird attached.

Add your scented wax bowl and you are done.

I absolutely LOVE how this project turned out. So much so I may be keeping it for myself!!! This was actually an easy project to make. The wax bowl itself took only an hour from start to finish, and the smell is absolutely amazing.

Beautifully done. Looks very natural. For those who don't know the legend, Cardinals are supposed to be Angels watching over us. That is why they are associated with Christmas. They are many colors in different areas, but we most often think of Mr Cardinal in Red. Mrs Cardinal is more subdued. In NE we begin to see them around Christmas or really cold weather. This is a great project, I will definitely try this sometime soon. Thank you. MA Happy Holidays.

Thanks so much MaryAnn, I have a male and female cardinal that make appearances by coming and sitting on my windowsill. Happy Holidays to you!
