Farmhouse Christmas Decor – Why Buy It? Make It Instead
While doing a bit of Christmas shopping, I found an over-sized ornament that I really loved. But the price was a little more than I wanted to pay. So, I took a photo of the ornament and kept it moving. But once I was home, I could not get the ornament out of my mind. And then it hit me. I had some items in my stash that may allow me to reproduce it. And that's what I set out to do.
This is the inspiration piece. I love the oversize and I love the somewhat muted colors. It is farmhouse but with a cottage feel. Or it could be cottage with a tweak or two.
So, I began with two ceiling fan blades that I thrifted back in the summer from our local restore. They have been sitting in my stash every since. But now I found a way to use them...I hoped.
I painted both blades red. I had to use two coats for complete coverage. Once the blades were red, I knew I was on the right track. As a side note, I did not fill in the holes because I knew I would cover them, but if you ever use blades like this for other projects, you can easily cover or close the holes with wood fill.
Once the red paint dried, I added the words. I cut the vinyl lettering on my Cricut vinyl cutter. If, however, you do not have a vinyl cutter you can always use a stencil, or you can purchase vinyl lettering.
I used a sponge brush to edge the rim in gold acrylic paint and finally added the greenery and the jingle bells. You can see each step in the attached video.
The video is a step-by-step tutorial for recreating the inspiration piece. This is one of those times when the end result of a DIY project makes you smile. Or at least it made me smile. I ended up using it on our tree.

Love it. The bow would have looked nice. But I think what ever a person likes is best.
