I love working with old furniture! The details and the character of these old dressers are so much fun! And I love how well these old dressers were built. But I don't always love the bottom of them. OR I need to add some height to a dresser (or nightstand or table).I love adding feet to the bottom of dressers to make them look more modern, or to just make them taller. Here's how! Learn more about the process and get links to the products that I actually used on my blog!
Here is what this dresser looked like before. I don't hate the bottom, but I think that new legs add so much more to this style of dresser than the vintage plain bottom.
So I took the drawers out of the dresser and then I laid it down on the ground so I could see how the bottom of this dresser was attached. I could see a bunch of holes where there were screws, and it didn't look like the wood from the main part of the dresser continued down to the bottom of the dresser.Perfect!! This is exactly what I wanted!
To remove the bottom detail of the dresser (the old legs) all I had to do was unscrew the screws in each of those holes, and whack the bottom off with a hammer.
I was left with a completely flat bottom around the edges of the dresser. Perfect for putting legs onto the bottom! The feet I purchased for this dresser came with little leg plates. They were a little different than the ones that I'm used to, but they worked great!(click over to my blog to get these exact legs!)First I had to drill a hole for the plate to sit in.
Then I put the plate into the hole and secured it into place with the screws provided. All that was left to do was screw the feet into place!

The worse part in adding feet was making sure they were exactly where I wanted them to be. I did a lot of measuring to make sure they were perfectly placed.
Then I painted the dresser and added fresh new hardware. This dresser looks completely different now! Click here to get more details on this makeover including links to the exact products I used and how I painted it, on my blog!
