Are you drawn to designer styles or is your decorating taste expensive? We love to add a little DIY embellishing to store bought accessories and give them that designer look at a fraction of the cost. Today would we like to share with you how to Revamp a Lamp! And also add that designer style to a pair of lamps for less than $10.
Today We are going to share with you how to give lampshades a designer look for less than $10 in under 30 minutes! We love how simple and inexpensive this project is and yet makes a huge statement!

These lamps and lampshades were purchased at World Market. We love how the gold pops off the deep navy wall and adds a little bit of glam to this space! As we began pulling all of the elements together in this space, we began to feel that the solid white lampshade were a little boring, in fact, they just needed a Revamp the Lamp.
Desiring to mimic the striped border on the duvet cover, stripes on the curtains, and accent chairs, we decided to take a little trip to Hobby Lobby to find some navy ribbon. Immediately we were drawn to the navy grosgrain ribbon, and bought a couple spools of 3/8″ grosgrain ribbon in navy.

This project is SO simple and you only need 3 supplies!
  1. Ribbon
  2. Glue gun
  3. Masking tape

To begin with wrap a piece of masking tape along the top and bottom edges of the lampshade. Making sure to apply it as evenly as we could, aligning the tape to the top and the bottom edges of the shade. The edge of the tape became the guide for applying the ribbon, as a result we were able to keep the ribbon nice and straight.
There is a small lip at the seam on the shade, that is where we placed a small dot of glue right below the tape on the left side (lower side) of the lip. Then we placed the edge of the ribbon over the glue making sure the ribbon was flush to both the seam and the tape.

We then slowly wrapped the ribbon around the entire lampshade and placed another small dot of glue this time on the right side (upper side) of the lip. Once the ribbon had been secured we cut the ribbon leaving about 1/2″ excess. Then to keep the edge of the ribbon from fraying, we placed another small dot of glue on the ribbon and folded it in half (towards the lampshade) over the glue.
Then we placed another dot of glue at the seam and placed the folded edge of ribbon into place. If we ever tire of these stripes on the lampshades or want to use them in another room, we can simply just remove the ribbon. Using just a couple dots of glue at the seam makes it easy to remove the ribbon if we choose to do so later.
Once the ribbon has been glued into place simply pull the masking tape off the lampshade and voila we are finished! It’s that EASY!

For a variation on this idea, use a wider ribbon, maybe 3″- 4″ and wrapped around the middle of the shade. Adding an accessory like a large button or a vintage brooch would be a fun additional also.

Experiment with different looks before committing to one style with the glue gun, let the creative juices flow, because the sky’s the limit!
What do you think of this quick and easy lampshade embellishment? What other clever ideas have you come up with to spruce up a lamp? We’d love to hear from you.
