Easter Wreath Inspired by My Mom

Let me start off by saying that I really don't do wreaths, but my mom does, and her's are amazing! She didn't really want me to share wreath tutorials, but I think this a fear that most artists/crafters have. I 100% disagree, I think that sharing helps us grow and that it'll come back your way tenfold! That's why I love sharing my tutorials on Hometalk- I want to share as much as I can and help to educate people. If we all give a little, we will all become better people. So, with that said, my mom has recently become ill so I jumped in and learned a few things. Firstly , that there is NO such thing as a $20 wreath! I know that $40-50 seems like a lot but let me tell you, that price barely covers the supplies. As I usually do, I headed to the dollar store to get my supplies thinking that it wouldn't be too difficult. I ended up having to head back to the store to get three times the amount of mesh I originally purchased 😂. Who knew? It's all a learning process.Well, let's get started! For those of you who asked for a wreath tutorial, this is for you!

What you'll need:

  • 7 rolls of mesh (I really could have used more. My mom says she uses 12, ugh!)
  • 14" wire frame
  • sign of your choice
  • 2 packs of pipe cleaners (that matches your mesh)

After I finished the wreath I realized that I should have used a 20" wreath form, but hey! I'm a beginner! You'll also need ribbon (and that's where the price goes up!)

First, roll out your mesh and cut at 8”.

It will roll up once you cut it. That’s totally fine and actually helps us for what we want that with this technique. I found it was easy to do a whole roll at a time.

Once your whole roll is cut up, take 3 pieces, and a pipe cleaner (cut in 1/2), pinch them in the middle, and then tie the pipe cleaner around them.

Do this to all of the mesh.

Once you have them all made, start adding them to the wire fram like this. The pipe cleaner does the work! Tip from my mom- make sure to twist them all the way down, so they don't scratch the surface it'll be hung on.

This is what it should look like from the front.

Continue this until your whole wreath is covered (you want to fill up each wire ring).

One hour later... man this takes time and I’m only 1/2 way done!

Phew, all done! Once finished with the mesh, add some pipe cleaner to the back of the sign. Another thing I learnt along the way was to use a whole pipe cleaner. This way, you have room to adjust the sign, and you can move it around without smashing the mesh.

Pull it though the mesh and wire and tie it in the back like this.

Now it's time for the fun part! My mom had a box of ribbon which she had cut for other wreaths, so I started there. I pulled all of the colors I liked and would match. I think they say the rule of thumb is max 5 colors, but I don't like rules!

I then went and grabbed some new ones I liked as well! I didn't use all of them, but on average they cost $7 a roll. So $20 would be a bare minimun for a wreath!I may have spent a bit more on this wreath than I wanted, but it's all about learning!

Cut the edges all in a V by just folding ribbon in 1/2 and cutting on a diagonal.

Next I take my ribbons and cross them like so, and use a pipe cleaner to cluster them.

I love the splash of colors I chose! Then you need to choose a spot on the wreath to place your ribbon. My sign had a hole, so I put my first bunch there! 😊

I think I used 7 rule of a designer no even numbers 😂 can’t take the designer out of me!

Repeat this step 3 more times so you have a few of them. Then place them all where yo like, and add a bow, and you should have a beautiful full wreath!

What do you think? This is a 3 hour job and about $100 of supplies if you didn’t have these ribbons 🎀 on hand you may not use full rolls but to get the colors you still need to buy them... and at $7 a roll it adds ups fast! So now you can see why I said there is no such thing as a $20 wreath. My mom usually sells hers for under $50! Luckily she loves it and at 70 years young it gives her something to do. The goal of this post is to educate people on the process, time, materials that are involved. It’s a labor of love for sure! You surely are not going to become rich making these, but it is self rewarding and it brightens a room!

Happy Easter to all!
