A friend of ours had a baby crib that could not be reused or donated since it did not meet current safety standards. Rather than see it go into the landfill, she asked if we wanted to try to find a way to upcycle or reuse it in some way. We were up for the challenge so we said 'yes' to the offer. This is the first of three projects we made with the crib parts.

Please watch the video to see how the slide out shoe storage came together!

This is the crib we started with. We decided we'd use the mattress platform first. Steph's first idea was to use it as a place to work on Legos rather than for shoes.

This is what would be the top side of the mattress platform. Unfortunately, that sticker you see in the picture, would not come off! We decided to take this apart to see if we could flip it over so the sticker mess would be on the bottom, unseen.

We started by removing these four brackets using a Dremel Go which is a super handy rechargeable powered screwdriver.

After we finished removing them, the mattress platform actually fell apart. There was nothing, other than the brackets, that was keeping this together. This was a happy discovery as it made flipping over the board really easy.

Once we flipped the board over, we used wood glue and a few brad nails to secure everything in place.

To give the new slide out shoe storage mobility, we hot glued the pair of appliance casters to the bottom.

These casters only provide forward and back motion which is perfect to slide something under the bed.

Here it is all filled up! This has 11 pairs of shoes on it. It easily slides in and out under the bed. The flats fit easily, but heels must be laid on their sides.
