Abstract Galaxy Accent Wall

My husband and I spent six weeks doing a teen bedroom makeover for the Fall 2019 One Room Challenge. One of the most eye-catching features is the painted mural accent wall. My teen asked to paint it to look like an abstract galaxy and the result turned out just as we imagined.

"Before"

When we moved into this house four years ago, we painted every room gray. After living with it, I realized the color was just dull. We've been slowly repainting the rest of the house and let our kids design their own bedrooms.

Step 1: Painting a base color. For the first step of how to paint an accent wall, my husband painted the wall dark blue - "Deep Arctic Night." This is actually the color of the whole room now.

Step 2: Painting the nebula. After the wall dried, the teen jumped in and started painting with the other colors using a mix of brushes and hands. The colors are:

  • light purple – Perennial Sweetpea by Clark + Kensington
  • medium purple – Majesty Violet by PPG
  • dark purple – Bradford Blue by Clark + Kensington
  • dark blue – National Anthem by Behr
  • light blue – Dark Westwind Blue by PPG
  • green – Vibrant Meadow by Clark + Kensington

The shape started as concentric circles, but with smudging and blending started coming together to look more abstract.Although there are six different colors (plus the base wall color) in this accent wall mural, it was a budget-friendly project. We paint a lot, so most of these were leftover from previous projects.

Step 3: Adding tiny stars. At the end, we splattered white paint from a bristle brush onto the wall to look like stars.

For this teen bedroom makeover, we also replaced the carpet with wood plank flooring, refinished the vintage furniture, and did a ton of decluttering!

Seven different paints? Was this very costly?

Have you considered painting over the light switch cover so it blends in? That white cover just jumps out at you on that dark wall and takes away from the galaxy look.
