DIY Farmhouse Tray

After coming across a really cute serving tray in a store one day, but with a price tag I wasn't willing to pay. I decided to make one myself. With the help of my handy husband!

For the sides of the tray we used:

1 1″x3″x5′ pine (or spruce) – cut 2 @ 25″ long
1 1″x4″x2′ pine (or spruce) cut into 2 @ 12″ lengths

And for the bottom we used a scrap piece of plywood and a faux tin ceiling tile cut to fit.

HOW TO MAKE A DIY WOOD TRAY:

cut 2 lengths of 1″ x 3″ lumber at 25″ each, and sand to slightly round top edges
cut 2 lengths of 1″ x 4″ lumber to 12″ each
To create the handles and curved end piece I have included a link to a template pdf in the full blog post. Center on each piece of 1 x 4 to trace pattern.
Carefully cut out with a jigsaw and sand to create smooth round edges in the handle and the top edge of each piece.

Cut the plywood to 12" by 24"
Using PL premium or other wood adhesive adhere sides to the edge of the plywood, securing with brad nails.

When all the sides are secured and the adhesive has set, stain using the colour of your choice.

The last step is to cut the faux ceiling tile to fit the bottom of the tray and adhere in place with adhesive.

Press and smooth into place.

That is all there is to it!

The original tray that was my inspiration was $65.

The most expensive element of this DIY version was the faux ceiling tile that cost $18. We had to purchase the 1 x 4 and 1 x 3, but had everything else already on hand which kept the cost down.

Is there a ReStore near you? They usually have lots of ceiling tile material for hardly nothing if you ever want to make more!

I'm inspired by this I have some bed slats and scrap ply , I will adapt handles but follow the rest thank you

You can find really cheap wood trays at The Home Store...if you or your partner are not skilled to make them.
Look in the discount section....they have many that just need a touch up or paint.
