Dollar General Mason Jar Wall Sign Makeover

I always browse the decor and craft aisles at our local Dollar General. Most of its items have a mass produced vibe, that a little paint and embellishing can fix.

Last spring I found this jar shaped sign with zinc lid at Dollar General for $1. I thought I could transform the sign into a boutique/craft shop style piece.

First I removed the zinc lid that was screwed onto the sign, and base coated it with Rustoleum Flat Black Latex Paint. To dull the shininess of the metal jar cap, I soaked it for about a half hour in white vinegar in a baggie.

I then brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Paint in Hurricane Gray.

After my gray paint dried, I pulled out a fern frond stencil that I had purchased at Hobby Lobby very inexpensively.

I laid the stencil on my jar. It was a little large, but I was able to stencil the most of the frond on the right and parts of fronds on the left.

I used Waverly Inspirations Chalk Finish Paint in Celery for the stenciling.

I then gave the edges of my project a light sanding to distress the jar, and waxed the jar with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.

As an extra embellishment, I used a chalkboard paper tag stenciled with this Folkart Mini Garden stencil to tie onto the jar.

I stenciled the words with white craft paint.

The metal lid, dulled from the vinegar bath, was screwed back on and the chalkboard tag was added with jute twine.

I like my version of the jar sign so much better!

Dollar General got in another shipment of jar signs. I have upcycled another one in a detailed post HERE.
