Learn how to make easy DIY wax melts using beeswax to create a fresh, spring fragrance in your home. Whether you use fragrance oils or essential oils to craft your homemade wax melts, this easy recipe allows you to create custom scents you can swap out throughout the year.

How to Make DIY Wax Melts with Beeswax: Melt Your Wax

I used a combination of beeswax and palm kernel flakes to create my DIY wax melts with beeswax. While soy wax seems to be the go to for this type of project, I make soap. Therefore these were items I had on hand. If desired, you can use soy wax in their place.

Otherwise, the combination of these two ingredients melt the same as soy wax and offer a strong fragrance when use in your wax melt warmer.

To make your wax melts, weigh out equal parts beeswax and palm kernel flakes. Combine in a double boiler and heat until melted.

Add Dried Botanicals to Your Clamshell Molds

I wanted my DIY wax melts with beeswax to remind me of spring. So I decorated them with dried cornflowers for a touch of floral. They are such a pretty color. And I thought they contrasted nicely with the green mica I used to color my wax melts.

Of course, you don't need to add botanicals or colorant to your DIY wax melts. But in doing so, I think it makes them extra pretty. It also makes them suitable for gifting. I think these are lovely in a housewarming gift basket.

If you want to use cornflowers, or another dried botanical, such as I did, add them to the bottom of your clamshell molds while your beeswax and palm kernel flakes are melting.

Add the Color and Fragrance to Your DIY Wax Melts

Once your beeswax and palm kernel flakes have completely melted, allow the wax melt mixture to cool to 140°F. (I like using a laser thermometer to measure the temperature of my wax.)

At this point, you can mix in a pinch of mica powder for color. Stir to incorporate. Then add your favorite fragrance oil. Or add an essential oil blend or essential oil of your choice. Mix well to combine.

If using a fragrance oil, you can use up to 14% of the total weight of the wax. Therefore , if you used 2.5 oz. each of beeswax and palm kernel flakes (for a total of 5 oz.) as I did, you would add .6 oz. of fragrance oil

Should you choose to use essential oils, you can add up to 7% of the weight of the wax.

Pour the Wax Melt Mixture Into Your Molds

Now pour the wax melt mixture into your clamshell molds. For 5 oz. of wax, you will need two clamshell molds.

Allow the wax to cool completely and fully harden. Once set up, your DIY wax melts are ready to use the next day.

Decorate Your Wax Melt Containers

If you'd like to gift this easy home fragrance idea, you can simply tie a pretty ribbon around the clamshell mold.

How to Use Your DIY Wax Melts

To use your wax melts, simply break off one square. Then place the wax melt in a wax melt warmer and enjoy!

Good to know. I heard it was 24-48 hours, so I didn't realize a longer cure was better. Thanks for the tip!
