Wood Porch Pot Planter Box

Here's what you'll need for lumber (mine are all non-pressure treated spruce) :

• 1 2"x2"x8' (shown already cut) (legs)
• 2 1"x2"x8' (horizontal trim)
• 2 1"x4"x8' (sides)
• 1 1"x3"x8' (top trim)

Additional supplies:

• Miter saw/skill saw
• Brad nailer (or power drill)
• Measuring tape
• Square

Cuts:

• 1x4's: cut 12 @ 16"
• 2x2's: cut 4 @ 2'
• 1x2's: cut 4 @ 15.5" and 4 @ 14"
• 1x3's: cut 4 @ 13.25"

Assemble the two sides that will include the legs:

Lay down your two 1x2's cut to 15.5". Measure and mark out 2.25" from the ends of each piece. Between those lines is where you can lay three 1x4's. There should be enough room for a bit of a gap on each side. Nail/screw together.

Assemble the other two sides of the box:

Lay down your 1x2's cut to 14". Measure and mark out 1.5" from the ends of each piece. Lay three 1x4's between the marks and space out evenly.

Attach the legs:

Using your two sides made with the 15.5" 1x2's, lay your 2x2's on each side. There should be exactly 0.75" left on each side of the 1x2 and enough room for a small gap between the 2x2 and 1x4.

Make sure the top is flush for attaching the top trim later.

Assemble the sides together:

Nail/screw together the sides by lining up the top and bottom 1x2's.

Attach the trim:

Lay out and nail down the 1x3's .

*Optional:

Attach pieces of the leftover 1x2 and 1x3 to the inside of the box to create a stand/shelf for pots smaller than 12" to sit.

This box will fit a 12" round or square pot to sit on top of the trim or a smaller sized pot, but with the inside shelf assembled.

Done! I like the way this box looks unstained, but I might stain it later to match the furniture on our porch!
