With everything that is taking place in the world (as we write this blog), we are all finding ourselves at home. We are working from home, homeschooling our children, teaching our pets to do yoga with us, and just generally trying to find ways to entertain ourselves...at home. It can be a challenge but I have always believed in crafting as a means to keep the creative juices flowing and in helping to refocus that potential pent up energy!

Today, we are introducing our kid’s crafting series - Funday Friday! We will be making Wax Paper Crayon Hearts icon

This week’s craft was inspired by a Facebook group that I belong to (Happy Heart Hunt). Their goal is to capture photos of heart designs found on windows, in nature, anywhere they can be viewed at a distance. So we took a wax paper crayon creation idea and decided to shape it into hearts!

What You'll Need

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Wax Paper
  • Crayons
  • Pencil Sharpener or Grater
  • Kraft Paper or Paper Bag
  • An Iron
Let's Get Started!

First, the crayons. You’ll need to remove the paper covering (if the kiddos are struggling with this part, you can take a razor blade or exacto knife to remove them before they are part of the crafting process!). Once those are off, the kids can start shaving the crayons. Take the pencil sharpener or grater, one crayon and start sharpening or grating into a cup or other container. One color per container is best or they can choose up to 5 colors (any more and the finished product starts to get muddied) and put them in one cup! **Bonus craft! - you can take the extra pieces of crayon, pop them into a silicone mold, warm them up in the oven and...voila! You now have rainbow crayons!**

Get Creative!

Once the shavings are all created, lay out sheets of wax paper (approximately 24” long, one for each child) and fold/crease them in half. Open the sheet back up and place on a piece of kraft paper or paper bags. Now, let your children’s imaginations run wild!

They can scatter their crayon shavings onto one half of the wax paper - they do not need to completely cover the paper as the wax will melt and fill in any gaps and we will be shaping the creation into a heart AFTER they have hardened. When the shavings are all in place, fold the wax paper over them and place another piece of kraft paper or paper bags on top of the wax paper.

Time to Iron!

While I recommend setting the iron to the lowest setting, this step is for older, more responsible children or a parent. Give the iron a few passes over the top layer of kraft paper and take a sneak peek to see if all the shavings have melted. If they have, set everything aside to let it cool.

Ta-da!

With everything cooled down, it’s time to take off the kraft paper. Remove the crayon creation and now you can shape it (regular scissors work great) into any shape you want!

Happy Hearts!

We decided on hearts and look at how cute they turned out! My kiddos would love to hear if you have any other project ideas for them so please feel free to leave us a comment with an idea or inspiration!

Think that is so great and cute - just wonder though about how it will hold up in a sunny window with a hot sun?

Just wanted to make sure I understand the process. After ironing and cooling, you only remove the craft paper and not the wax paper, correct? I think this is a nice way to decorate for Easter.

I like the way they turned out. They look like stained colored glass...

And you can al.ost see through them. I found your instructions a bit confusing....so I will just double check with you....so basically you lay down some paper to protect the surface then place your waxed folded paper with the crayon shavings in between. Once done place a paper bag over everything and press with the warm iron. Once done pressing remove paper and then cut out your shaper???
