I found this wonderful laser cut wooden butterfly and thought it would be such a lovely addition to the garden to brighten up a fence.

I choose to use the water colour pencils as I find them easy and cleaner than acrylics as brushes but of course you can choose to do it that way with equally good results.

Begin painting your butterfly

I choose to paint the outer edge firstly and let it dry before building up next layer of colour. The water colour pencils are so easy just dip the nib I to water and begin painting.

I keep on colour and pattern with a blend of dark and light contrasting shades.

I use circles and try and create a balanced design on the wings.

When I’ve finished the design and it’s dry I lay the butterfly onto the grass and I use a spray fixative protective top coat.

And lastly I hang up the butterfly in various places in my garden .
