Citrus-Printed Tea Towels
Hi! It's Jess from Jessica Welling Interiors. Let's get some crafting on with this quick and fun project... DIY tea towels for Mother's Day... or just because! I love how bright and colorful these are. And couldn't we all use a bit of bright and cheerful right now?
Supplies
Cut the lemon in half.
Use a large knife to cut the lemon in half along the equator. It's important for this cut to be very straight, to create a flat stamping surface.
Squeeze some juice out.
Squeeze some, but not all of the juice out. Otherwise the juice will mix with your paint later and make a mess.
Carve out some of the pulp.
Next, use a pairing knife to carve out some of the pulp, being careful to leave the membranes in-tact.
Mix paint.
Mix some acrylic craft paint, a small squirt of fabric medium, and a little water together on your paper plate or paint tray.
Apply paint to lemon.
Use a dab dab dab motion to paint the cut surface of the lemon, being sure to get all the membranes.
Test
I recommend doing a few test stamps on a paper towel to be sure you have just the right amount of paint. The ones on the top in this picture were before I carved the pulp out, and the bottom ones were done after.
Stamp.
Apply firm pressure and stamp the lemon onto the tea towel. You'll need to re-apply paint every one or two times you stamp it. Continue the pattern until you've covered the whole tea towel. Hang to dry, and you're done!
