This fun mason jar flower pot is an easy DIY project to make and will look lovely in your home. Use them as a table centerpiece or put them on your porch. Wherever you decide to display them, people will be asking how you made them - trust me!

Mason Jar Planters

These are great gifts for Mother's Day or just a nice added home decor piece and a great way to upcycle old clothing that otherwise might end up in the garbage.

Materials

  • Old shirt to upcycle
  • Standard or large mason jar
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Mod podge
  • Foam brush
  • A stick - a few inches taller than the jar
Cut The Shirt

Using your scissors or rotary cutter and ruler, cut the shirt into strips.

For a standard mason jar, you'll need strips about 7 inches long and 1 inch wide.

We used about 15 strips for this project.

Glue Shirt Strips

Apply Mod Podge to the inside of the jar (or directly to the strips of shirt) with your foam brush and glue the strips onto the inside surface of the jar.

Use the stick to work the fabric down in and to the bottom of the jar.

Repeat The Process

Repeat this process until each jar has fabric wrapped around the entire inside.

Trim the excess fabric hanging out around the rim if necessary.

When you finish adding fabric, apply a coat of Mod Podge over all of the fabric to seal it.

Add Soil and Plants

After the Mod Podge is dry, add soil and plants or flowers.

Alternatively, you can add faux flowers for a long lasting presentation!

Wouldn’t the plants rot? There’s no drainage hole in the mason jar.

I agree with Theresa. Not only that but if you put fabric inside, the fabric would get moldy and rot! But...if you put the fabric on the outside , that would hold up alot better! You could also arrange the fabric horizontal or vertical on the glass if that's your preference?! Just throwing out ideas!!!

If you did this on the outside, the strips could be woven.

Very true! However it won't have the same effect as it does when it's seen through the glass. Worth a try to see how it turns out! I have a couple planters where I put fabric on the outside, thought I'd try something different with the glass here :)

You could use them as starter jars too. I usually just use a old glas cup or vace but I never thoughr to do this. When starting the roots all I need is water and sun so I'm gonna decorate my old glasses now! Thank u. Maybe use epoxy instead of mod podge to prevent mold.
